  • Certainly. We call that self-pay or uninsured, and under a 2022 law, you’re entitled to a Good Faith Estimate of the cost of therapy. You can read the relevant information here.

Several of our clinicians also ensure they have sliding scale and pro-bono availability.

  • Therapy, at its core, is expert guidance in overcoming an emotional challenge. We are social creatures, but when we feel depressed, sad, angry, or disappointed, we often pull away from others and try to manage those feelings on our own. This in turn causes more problems, which makes us feel worse.

So, we need to address our problems with other people.

Some people are fortunate enough to have friends and family who can support them and provide help. But sometimes even our friends aren’t able to get enough distance from our problems to help us. That’s when you need to call an expert.

In therapy, you tell us about whatever problem you’re feeling stuck with, and we ask you questions and offer gentle nudges to guide you toward insights, and then we look for ways you can act on those insights.

  • You’ll probably be eager to tell your therapist a fair bit about your problem during the first appointment—we get it, you’re excited to finally be getting help!—but our first session will be what’s called an intake. That’s where we collect important information about you that’s part of the bigger picture of your life. There will also be some paperwork to sign (yay, paperwork!).

Once the intake is completed, we’ll dive into your specific problem and start looking for steps you can take to make real changes in your life.

  • Each session is about 50 minutes, but the number of sessions depends on the person and the problem. Some people come for a few months, some come for years. Some use up a quota set by their insurance, some choose to pay out of pocket after that point.

Let your therapist know if you ever have specific concerns about the length of therapy.

  • This is a common policy designed to encourage clients to respect a professional’s time. We earn our living by seeing clients, not by how many appointments we have scheduled at the beginning of the week. It’s similar to how airlines and hotels might charge cancellation fees if someone cancels last minute: holding the appointment for that person meant that they were unable to serve another person.
